Introduction
The aim of this Virtual Special Issue is to bring together a collection of articles published in the Health Information Management Journal (HIMJ) and HIM-Interchange* (HIM-I), which highlight some of the most significant historical developments that have taken place alongside the history of the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) and the profession. This Collection, a sample of published articles from each decade, selected by the guest editors, contributes a scholarly perspective to the Association, reflecting on its past and planning for the future. These articles are a record of historical developments in health information management through the eyes of researchers and authors; they are embedded in the context of their time and address the challenges faced by the profession over the decades. As beautifully described by Phyllis Watson in her editorial celebrating the 75th Anniversary of HIMAA (Watson, 2026), articles published in the Association’s two journals have been at the forefront of communicating and disseminating contemporary knowledge and developments in health information management since its earliest inception. Unfortunately, many of the earliest contributions are no longer available, but thanks to SAGE Publications, publisher of HIMJ, contributions from the 1980s and 1990s have been preserved and are published on the Journal’s website.
We acknowledge the editorial contributions of Elizabeth Morrison, Managing Editor of HIMJ, to this Virtual Special Issue.
* Until 2010, both research and professional practice articles were published in HIMJ. In 2011, HIMAA’s new professional practice journal, HIM-Interchange (HIM-I) was launched and professional practice articles have since been published in HIM-I.
