The Clinical Coder Working Group (CCWG) continues to work on producing a set of Performance Standards and an Assessment Guide for Clinical Coders.

Work on the performance standards is well progressed with a small subset of CCWG members having produced a first draft. Good discussion was had at the May 2022 and June 2022 meetings of the CCWG and the working group will continue to fine tune the content in response to these discussions. Eleven domains against which performance standards are being produced have been settled on at this stage. They are:

  • Completion of orientation/education programs
  • Abstraction of clinical information
  • Clinical engagement and communication
  • Communication with hospital executive
  • Assigning of clinical codes
  • Capture of coded data and related administrative data through the use of local software tools
  • Understanding funding models
  • Responding to requests for coded data
  • Maintenance of ethical practice
  • Promotion of clinical coding expertise within hospital and other organisations.

The Performance Standards will relate to entry level/trainee positions, Clinical Coder, Senior Clinical Coder and Auditor and Educator roles.

Later in 2022 we hope to provide the completed set of Performance Standards along with an accompanying survey to clinical coders for consultation and feedback. In the meantime, if you have any comments or questions about the information provided above, please contact us through the education committee on: educationcommittee@himaa.org.au

A second small working group has been established in the CCWG to start work on the assessment guide. We will provide further details about this work in a future issue of HIM-Interchange.

Meanwhile we are still collecting job descriptions which will be used to validate the content of the performance standards. If you have just updated your job descriptions, we would love to have a copy. Please send them to: educationcommittee@himaa.org.au

The CCWG now has representation from every state and territory in Australia. Members names are listed as authors of this article. You may contact any of these members if you wish to know more about the CCWG.
